Introduction: Project Scope

When In Town Roofing came to our store with a copper standing seam project, they knew they were in the right place. The job called for over 130 copper panels to be formed in 1" mechanical lock profiles. At Stortz Tools we specialize in tools and machinery for standing seam roofs. Let's take a look at what In Town needed to complete their job.

In Town was used to purchasing snap lock standing seam panels from their local roofing distributor, but when this mechanical lock job in copper surfaced, they needed to invest in some higher quality tools to make sure the job was done right.

Why Roll Form Panels On-site?

Producing 15-foot standing seam panels directly on the jobsite gave us greater control over quality while reducing both costs and logistical challenges. By roll forming panels on demand, we could manufacture the exact lengths they need, minimizing material waste and avoiding the delays associated with ordering and shipping pre-formed panels.

Eliminating freight costs and the risk of shipping damage can result in significant savings, especially on larger projects. Onsite production also provides complete control over scheduling, allowing contractors to adjust panel quantities and lengths as project conditions change without waiting for additional deliveries. With the ability to inspect each panel as it is produced, contractors maintain a higher level of quality control, ensuring consistent profiles and reducing the likelihood of installation issues. The result is a more efficient workflow, lower overall project costs, and the flexibility to keep production moving at the pace of the job.

Roll Forming with Schlebach Mini Prof Machine

We chose to work with the Schlebach Mini Prof machine for a number of reasons. It is dedicated to producing the profile being installed, 1" mechanical panels. That means no dealing with downtime to change out any rollers or other profiles.

It has a built in shear, on the back end of the machine, which requires little maintenance since it is only cutting flat metal.

It is equipped with a electric auto length measuring device. Just enter in your required panel length in inches and the machine will stop to allow you to shear before the panel is complete.

Choosing a Roll Former?

The Schlebach Mini Prof was the ideal solution for this project because it combines portability, precision, and production efficiency in a compact package designed for jobsite use. Its lightweight, mobile design allowed the machine to be positioned directly where the panels were needed, eliminating the challenges of transporting long finished panels through busy job sites. The Mini Prof consistently produced high-quality standing seam panels with precise profiles and clean bends, ensuring a well fitting double lock seams from first panel to last. Its quick setup and reliable operation enabled the crew to produce panels on demand, keeping installation moving without delays while maintaining complete control over panel lengths and quality.

Alternative Options - Schlebach Mini Light

In order to rollform this many 15ft panels, it is imperative that you have a rollforming machine. An alternative to the Schlebach Mini Prof Plus could be the Schlebach Mini Light machine. The Mini Light differs from the Mini Prof Plus because it lacks 3 features:

  • Electric length measuring device
  • Cross Cut Shear
  • Longitudinal Shear

Lacking these features does allow it to be the most portable rollforming machine on the market. The video below displays its portability and convenience.
