Project Scope

The house is a historical residence that was built in the 19th century. It is located in Newtown, PA which has many old buildings and a strong history connecting back to the Revolutionary war. It is common to see old tin, standing seam roofs as well as slate in the area.

Job:

Restore home to its original slate roof – Tear off existing asphalt shingles – replace rotted decking / framing – reroof shingled areas with Slate – reroof front porch roof with standing seam copper.

Materials Used:

20″ x 10″ North Country Slate

20oz Copper Sheets

50/50 (Tin/Lead) Solder

Shout out to Mike Austin for his skilled copper work.

Here you can see laid down seams that are tied into the standing seam hips.

Custom copper chimney caps were soldered on site.

Getting started with the counter flashing. Cutting out the mortar joints and fitting the copper pieces.

Here’s a trick for anyone out there struggling to keep their copper looking fresh and clean by the end of the job.

Try Bar keepers Friend. Just sprinkle the power on and wash it off to get a sparkling clean look at the end of your project.

Kaller is clearly a company that uses Slate roof brackets. Looks like a few could be replaced at this point :).
